This model is a high-level risk ranking tool used early in the evaluation of a CO₂ storage site to assess legacy wells in a quick, qualitative manner. When screening potential storage sites (e.g. during initial site selection or leasing), there may be dozens or hundreds of old wells in the area, but limited data on each. This model provides a consistent way to score each legacy well’s risk using basic, readily available information (age, status, etc.). The goal is to identify which sites or areas have “red flag” well issues that could jeopardize storage security or require expensive remediation.
